ePolicy Tip Sheet

January 26, 2001

Mind Your Electronic Manners

Use your eMail policy to provide employees with basic guidelines for acceptable and effective electronic correspondence. By its nature, eMail is a cold medium. Messages written and conversations held on-screen lack the warmth of face-to-face discussions and telephone calls.

Couple its coldness with the fact that many writers tend to type messages quickly-and sometimes thoughtlessly-and it's easy to see how eMail can result in hurt feelings and misunderstandings.

Adherence to the basic rules of netiquette (eMail etiquette) can alleviate problems and help cast your employees and your organization in a favorable light.
