ePolicy Tip Sheet

January 12, 2001

Give Employees Rules to Work By

At heart, eMail is a communications tool originally intended for quick, informal communication. Where once we used the telephone to exchange business and personal information, today we use eMail. And how. More people used the Internet during its first three years than used a telephone in its first 30 years.

Unfortunately, by replacing informal chat with eMail, we have created a process by which conversations are recorded and business decisions are documented electronically. The result is written ammunition that can make or break a workplace lawsuit.

Reduce exposures and manage overall eRisks by establishing and enforcing policies governing employees' writing. Settle for nothing less than good, clean commentary running through employees' eMail.
