Spam Jams Up Verizon
The Associated Press reports Verizon Communications was hit by millions of junk e-mail messages that slowed e-mail for as many as 200,000 Internet customers on the East Coast. According to a Verizon spokesperson, the organization twice was hit by tens of millions of spam messages.
Even a modest amount of spam can send your organization into a productivity nose-dive, triggering business interruptions, revenue losses, lawsuits, and other costly eDisasters.
If you are on the receiving end of spam, do not reply to the unsubscribe option. Often, your reply accomplishes just the opposite. Your reply confirms your e-mail address and may encourage the sender to sell and/or forward your address to other spammers.
The ePolicy Institute advises all employers, regardless of organization size or industry, to develop and implement a written eMail Policy that addresses spam as well as other eLiability and eCommunications concerns. Give employees clear rules to write by. Notify employees of your right to monitor e-mail. Spell out exactly what type of language and content is permitted. Enforce your eMail Policy consistently.
