Congress Overwhelmed by Wired Citizens
According to a report released this week by the Congressional Management Foundation and George Washington University, Congress is overwhelmed by e-mail. With 80 million e-mails a year hitting Congressional in-boxes, Capitol Hill is in the midst of an eCrisis.
Senators and representatives collectively receive 63,000 e-mails a month. Incoming House e-mail grew from 20 million messages in 1998 to 48 million in 2000. Constituents are slow to receive responses--if at all.
While your organization may not be receiving 80 million messages a year, even a modest amount of e-mail can send your organization into a productivity nose-dive, trigger workplace lawsuits, and lead to other costly eDisasters.
The ePolicy Institute advises all employers, regardless of organization size or industry, to develop and implement a written eMail Policy. Give employees clear rules to write by. Notify employees of your right to monitor e-mail. Spell out exactly what type of language and content is permitted. Enforce your eMail Policy consistently.
